What comes to your mind when you think of Australia? Maybe it’s sun, hot weather, beaches, kangaroos and opera houses. Perhaps a large rock sitting in the dessert, or maybe Kylie Minogue or The Mad Max series.
For a homegrown Aussie there are many things that we consider Australian. Hills Hoists, lamingtons, footy, Dame Edna Everidge, cricket and sunscreen are just a few. It’s trifle at Christmas, a BBQ with friends, an old Holden ute or a big brown snake.
For many people Sydney Harbour Bridge was the crossover to the promised land. Ayers Rock shines like a beacon to the world. There’s the endless coastline, roaring seas, sandy beaches, deserts and wild bush terrain.
But Australia is even more than that. We have mountain ranges with snow-capped peaks—a surprise to some—productive agricultural land, open plains and luscious rivers. Our cities are to die for with a blend of cultures uniquely entwining to become our own. Coffee, food and theatre – there’s something for everyone.
Traditionally this has all been underpinned by a sense of mateship, an attitude of ‘she’ll be right’. We’ve had a larrikin spirit and a pride in hard work and a fair go for all.
There are many things that make up Australia. If we asked a million Aussies, we’d get a million answers. The Great Australian Blog is an attempt to encapsulate some of that Australianess that we know and love; as a reminder to us who live here, and to represent it to those who’re yet to visit.
