10 Best Aussie Shops for Father’s Day Gifts

Father’s Day is a day to honour fathers, paternal figures, and the contribution and sacrifice they make for both their own children and society. In Australia, Father’s Day is enjoyed on the first Sunday of September.

This annual celebration had its origins in the United States early last century. The first recorded acknowledgement of Father’s Day was a church service to honour fathers in 1908, in Monongah West Virginia. The preceding year had seen the worst mining disaster in US history, which killed nearly 500 men and boys, left hundreds of women widowed, and countless children without a father. Although this service was a one-off event, around the same time in Washington, Sonara Smart Dodd began a campaign to have Father’s Day recognised as an annual event. This was prompted by her desire to honour her own father who had raised his family of six children after their mother had tragically died while giving birth.

It wasn’t long before Father’s Day caught on in Australia—there were small celebrations in the 1920’s and 30s—it slowly grew in popularity until Father’s Day was officially recognised in 1958. There is uncertainty as to why the first Sunday in September was chosen. It may simply have been for economic reasons, being a nice distance between Mother’s Day and Christmas.

In 2024 there are no rules regarding how Father’s Day is spent. Although it’s a great day to pamper dad and allow him to relax, some dads will prefer a more active day. There are numerous opportunities for outdoor activities in Australia, or quality restaurants to enjoy a leisurely meal. A gift and card are commonly given. There should be no expectation to spend a lot of money, particularly during these difficult economic times. Most dads appreciate socks, undies and perhaps a box of chocolates. Few people know your dad as well as you do. Get creative, think outside the box and have a wonderful day.
